This directory contains the packed source code for UNIX and VMS platforms,
for the latest release of HDF, version 4.1 Release 5. 
                                                                               

  HDF4.1r5.tar.Z   --> UNIX packed source code compressed with 'compress'
       To uncompress the file, type:    
          uncompress HDF4.1r5.tar.Z
          tar xvf HDF4.1r5.tar

  HDF4.1r5.tar.gz  --> UNIX packed source code compressed with 'gzip'
       To uncompress the file, type:
         gzip -cd HDF4.1r5.tar.gz | tar xvf -

  HDF4.1r5_vms.tar --> packed source code for VMS platforms 
       To uncompress the file, type:
         tar xvf HDF4.1r5_vms.tar

Once you have uncompressed the file, refer to the README file in the
top directory of the source code for information on the source code
contents.

The INSTALL file contains information on installing the software.
The files in the release_notes/ directory contain information regarding
the release, including information on compiling applications.
